Friday Night at the Wine Bar
It was a Friday night and there were two jazz gigs to choose from: the student bands at the Jazzfest or my friend Tyler and a trio he put together at Papou's wine bar. I chose the latter, since I could go to the jazzfest the next night. The kids sounded great. They did some Wayne Shorter pieces, some older tunes (winks at Count Basie), some heavy swing, some standards. I'd never heard the drummer play before, and he turned out to be excellent. I'm glad he made the trip from Charlotte. His playing is intense without being loud. A sensitive player, quirky and quiet, but rhythmically complex. Trevor was solid on the bass and Tyler was sounding great on tenor. Photo by Steve B.
